Tyre tread depth requirements

It is not only dangerous but also a legal requirement to have the correct tread depth on your tyres. Braking distances will be longer and grip will be less where a worn tyre is used. This will also be a MOT failure – if you present your car for its MOT test with any tyre below the legal limit, it will automatically be a fail.

The minimum legal tread depth for tyres in the UK is 1.6 mm across the central three quarters of the tyre. That means that if the tyre stands less than 1.6 mm above the central trenches that run across the tyre it is not considered roadworthy.

Our specialist team at Premier Tyres and Autocare Ltd will check your tyres to ensure they are not only legal but more importantly they are going to keep you safe.
